Special thanks to @whiskeypinesco for sponsoring this week's review! If you’re looking for a new/unique golf hat check em out. Plus they are having a huge 40% spring sale, so it’s perfect timing.
Browns Mill is a no frills, standard muni course. Despite being so close to downtown, the course has a very secluded feel to it and a surprising amount of elevation changes for being south of the city. While the back 9 layout has a bit more character, it’s a pretty basic course overall.
The tee boxes weren’t terrible, and the fairways were decent as well. Bunkers were fine. Unfortunately, the greens are not in good shape. The grass did not look healthy and was beaten down. Additionally, multiple cups were full of water, which leads me to believe they hadn’t been moved in a few days. Perhaps the greens will rebound in the next few months, but they are as rough as I’ve seen them in recent years.
Amenities are tough to gauge because while it is the only Atlanta muni course that has a range, it’s hit or miss… Today was a miss and the range was closed until the city showed up and re-opened it. They had no idea when that would be. It’s unfortunate because that would be a huge plus for a course like this. The carts work fine and there are a couple of putting greens. I didn’t stop at the turn, so I can’t speak to the food options, but I’m pretty sure they just have some standard snacks. No alcohol.
Value wise…if you live in this area it’s worth purchasing the Fore Pass ($30/mo). Free walking after 6. $13.50 after 2pm, and $25 during mid-day. Applies to Chastain, Tups, and Candler too. That is a solid value. However, if you don’t live in the area, I’ve played at much better courses for $40. On the weekend it’s $50 and it’s frankly not worth that right now. Your $50 can go much further at other courses in the area. Now, if you’re a walker and can get out there on a weekday, $30 is a good value for 18 holes.
At the $40-$50 price range, I can’t recommend Browns Mill at the moment. If their greens rebound, it would be a totally different story. For now, drive 10 mins to Sugar Creek instead.
