Chimney Oaks Golf Club

Public

Rates: $80-$125

Homer, GA

1hr 20mins Northeast of Downtown Atlanta

If you're going to drive all the way to Homer for golf it better be special... and it was. Chimney Oaks is one of those courses that only a handful of your golf friends have been to, and they rave about it. It's hard to explain unless you've been there, but I'll do my best.

Facilities

The clubhouse is relatively new and from the outside it looks more like a home than a clubhouse. Not sure if that was intentional, but it definitely creates an inviting environment walking in the door. Plenty of merch to choose from and nice grab and go station off to the side. They also have an indoor facility called "The Forge" featuring 2 hitting bays using Trackman and serves as their teaching area. It's a great hangout spot too with a full bar in the corner.

Practice Area

Grass tees and mats. The mats are pretty poor, but the grass tees are great. Awesome view too. Range balls were included and in a pyramid (always a nice touch).

The putting green is HUGE and (uniquely) has a bunker smack in the middle. I actually love that because it allows you to practice out of the bunker and avoid facing other golfers.

They also had something I've NEVER seen before... a Chipping/putting green next to hole 10! I imagine that is primarily for when they are starting on 10 for some reason, but it's also a nice time killer in case there's a little backup after the turn.

The Course

The layout was so much fun. If you've read my reviews you know I really value variety, so to give you a quick snip-it:

Hole 1 - Long par 4 with an elevated tee shot, up to an elevated green.

Hole 2 - Strong dog leg right. Iron off the tee. Beautiful green complex with water to the left.

Hole 3: Straight away, but a sneaky creek before a green surrounded by bunkers
Hole 3: Straight away, but a sneaky creek before a green surrounded by bunkers

You might think three par 4s in a row would be boring, but each hole required a different tee shot and a different challenge. Loved the opening stretch.

Par 3s Hole 4: Flat, creek short, bunker short - hit a 7i

Hole 8: The signature hole (see title slide), downhill at least 1 club, bunker long and short - hit a PW Hole 11: Very downhill, full club less. Hazard on the right - hit a 9i

Hole 15: Uphill and challenging. Massive bunker short. - hit a 6i

I also felt that the two 9s were very distinct. The front featured wide open spaces and huge vistas. Almost felt like links golf with how open everything was. On the back, starting on 13, it get's much tighter. If you can make it through the 13-16 stretch and not blow up, 17 and 18 open back up for a comfortable finish.

Conditions

Tee boxes were in very good shape, especially considering the time of year. The grass was still very dormant, but there wasn't a single tee box that felt beat up. I wouldn't call them overly manicured, but everything was cut short and even. That said, I've looked at pictures during the summer and they do a bit more manicuring to the tee boxes in-season.

Mower lines
Mower lines

Fairways were great. Love the mower lines aesthetic. I bet it looks incredible during the summer. Only hole 2 gets a little soggy, but other than that they were fantastic.

Bunkers were in very good shape. Plenty of sand, and tight edges. I also liked how they were used. From the blues the fairway bunkers were only in play on a bad drive. Otherwise they were coverable. Personally I like that. I don't mind being punished for a bad shot. But it can be frustrating hitting a great drive only to end up in a bunker.

Greens were pure, fast, and a ton of fun. Many of the green featured a ton of undulation too. 14 is one that sticks out in my mind. We had a front left pin and had to play it multiple feet out to the right to give ourselves a chance.

Misc.

Pace of play was amazing for us because we were the first tee time out haha... I did speak with some locals and they said in general the pace of play is usually solid. It's not a terribly difficult course, which helps.

They have some great stay and play packages. In addition to the golf they have a pool, tennis/pickle ball courts, fitness center, restaurant, and The Forge as mentioned earlier.

Value

$125 for a weekend tee time comes with high expectations, and I would say they were exceeded. From the hospitality, to the facilities, to the golf, it was a top notch experience. Well worth the drive and the expense. If you can go on a weekday, $80 is a really good value. Do note that it is $100 on Fridays. They also have 9-hole tee times and walking is available on request.

I definitely recommend Chimney Oaks.
