The Chimneys Golf Course

Public

$65-$115

1 hr east of Atlanta

This review is sponsored by The Fairway Society Golf Apparel. I actually got to play this round with Kyle, the owner of The Fairway Society, and he's good people and worth supporting. His apparel is high quality, but very reasonably priced. He actually uses the same manufacturer as FootJoy, but is around 30% less expensive. Use code: ATLGOLFS for 25% off!

The Chimneys is owned by the City of Winder, but you'd never know it was a city owned course. Conditions were great, layout was a blast, and the facilities were very good. I drove nearly 1.5 hrs (I live in Marietta) and would gladly do it again.

Clubhouse was pretty simple overall, but had the basics. Love their logo, so I snagged a ball marker. And yes, there were options other than poker chips (hate those).

The range was grass (YES!) and a large bucket was only $8. Hell yeah. There was a little chipping area tucked away and the putting green was on the way to the first tee (+1 for convenience).

I absolutely loved the layout. Elevated tee shots, drivable par 4s, short par 3s, long par 3s, and views for days. The finishing hole in particular had everything. Massive risk reward decision from an elevated tee shot, then the approach takes you back uphill. A huge bunker lurks to catch mishits if you go for it in 2, and the green is framed by a beautiful stone wall. If I had to critique it'd be that the course plays very short for anyone that can drive 250 yards+.

The conditions far exceeded my expectations. All of the normal stuff was great - tee boxes cut short, greens rolling quick, fairways and bunkers played as expected. But it was the aesthetics of the course that had me in awe. The use of stone throughout was so tasteful and elevated the experience far beyond any normal city course. Even the use of tall grass to frame holes, or to highlight hazards, was so well done. There were probably 4 or 5 times that I said out-loud, "This is stunning."

The only critique I have were the food/drink options. It was just snacks and basic drinks. I'm not someone who needs a full restaurant, but not even a hotdog roller? That just seems like such an easy solution. They did have a cart person driving around with plenty of alcoholic beverages to choose from.

On the day we paid $66 for a Friday, mid-day tee time, which felt like an absolutely steal. Even at the top-end $115 weekend rate, the experience is worth it (even without a hotdog). But even on weekends, by noon the price drops to around $75. Just give me some lunch options and the overall experience might be a 10/10 on value.

I don't think I have say much more. Pack a lunch, and make the trip out to The Chimneys. You won't be disappointed.
