If you like short, quirky, and great greens, you'll love City Club. If you prefer a more traditional golf experience, it might not be your favorite course in the area, and that's ok.

That said, I believe City Club offers something unique compared to almost every other course in the metro-Atlanta area... It fills a very specific gap. Typically, golf courses are either executive/par 3 courses that are very beginner friendly, OR they are a full Par 72 course. City Club sits in the gap. By providing a Par 71 course, but that tips out at only 5800, it's the perfect course for beginners to play after "graduating" from the executive style courses.

Clubhouse

The club is connected to the Hilton which is a beautiful white building with massive columns. It's got a ton of interesting history connected to it. But the golf clubhouse is off to the left of the hotel. (They do have some stay and play options available)

The clubhouse is on the larger size for a club of City Clubs stature. The pro shop has plenty of options. I really like their cannon logo, which is featured on the merch. Definitely worth snagging a few pieces when visiting.

The grill is also very nice. Plenty of options and everything I've had there has been very good, especially the hot dogs.

One pro-tip, park on the side of the club house close to the driving range. Parking out front of the pro shop is much more inconvenient.

Practice Facilities

The practice facilities offer a lot of variety of options and include the following:

  • Mat + Grass Range (I rarely see the grass open tbh, but they did upgrade their mats this past year.)

  • 2 putting greens

  • 1 pitching green (green side to 40ft away)

  • Chipping green

  • 2 practice bunkers (not great condition, but good enough)

The Golf Course

I always feel like I use every club in the bag when I place City Club, but knowing what club to pull and when is one of the challenges you'll face. Holes like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 15 all use doglegs that make you think twice off the tee. You've got to hit your spot. Use GPS maps or the cart map. You'll need it.

The interesting thing is what clubs I usually hit on these holes off the tee:

2 - 7i

4 - 7wood

6 - 6i

8 - Driver

10 - 5i

15 - 7i

The par 3s are just ok overall, and while 3/4 are short, they still offer some unique challenges. The signature Hole 12 is by far the standout. With the water short and azaleas framing the green... it definitely gives some Augusta vibes.

Hole 12 - Signature Par 3
Hole 12 - Signature Par 3

Hole 3: 50 degree- If the pin is on the back tier... good luck. Oh and don't miss left.

Hole 7: 54 degree- Miss right and you're almost guaranteed a double. Also a tiered green.

Hole 12: 7i - The signature Par 3. Requires an elevated carry over water. One of my favorite par 3s around.

Hole 17: PW - I hate this hole. Idk why. It's not hard... but it has ruined countless rounds for me.

I also have to mention that the opening tee shot is a blast. HUGE elevation drop. It's great opening hole. I actually named it my 3rd best opening hole in the metro.

Conditions

Some tee boxes needed some TLC, and the edges of some fairways do wash out, but overall I can always count on decent conditions at City Club.

The teeth of the course is the greens. They are very grainy, which means they can be extremely fast down grain and 2x slower going up grain. Always check the grain before putting! It's amazing just how healthy these remain throughout the year. Even my off-season City Club review raved about the greens.

Bunkers are a little hit and miss, but overall they are more than adequate.

Misc.

The pace of play can definitely get slow at times. This is mainly due to there being a couple driveable par 4s that everyone thinks they can hit. Do us all a favor and hit iron off the tee. Chances are you need the practice anyways.

They also upgraded their golf carts recently.

Value

I think City Club is a very good value. $66 for a weekend tee time featuring the caliber of greens is awesome. Take into account all of the amenities and I think most walk away from City Club feeling like they got a decent bang for their buck.

Lean into the quirk and take some extra time on the practice green and I think you'll have a really fun experience.

I recommend playing City Club Marietta.
