Westside of Atlanta

John A. White (JAW) is a short, par-35 course located in Southwest Atlanta, about 7 miles from downtown. It's definitely a budget course, but since Bobby Jones Golf Links took over management in 2023, the course has been steadily improving.

One of the biggest improvements is a major new clubhouse / community facility - opening in late 2026. A 29,000-square-foot two-story multi-use center is under construction that will include senior community amenities, pro shop, classrooms, simulators, restaurant/bar, event spaces, etc. Link

Currently, the clubhouse is pretty bare-bones, so this will be a huge upgrade to the experience.

Unfortunately, the construction means the grass(!) range is currently closed, which is a huge bummer. If you're playing one of the other city courses nearby like Tup or Browns Mill (who don't have ranges), the JAW range is usually a great place to warm up. I do like the putting green near the first tee. That's always a nice convenience as you wait for your round to start.

The layout is very fun! Considering it's a par-35 and only 2800yds from the tips, it has more variety than you might think. Hole 1 is a 500+ yard par 5 with an epic elevation drop off the tee. The three par 3s offer different challenges - from 115 to 190 yds. And even the short par 4s make you think through a couple options before choosing the club.

The biggest concern I have when paying less than $20 for a round is if I'm going to playing on dirt the whole time. But that wasn't the case. I was very impressed by the conditions considering the cost. A few tee boxes were a little wonky and a couple were mats... plus there are some dead spots scattered around the greens - usually around the fringe, though. Bunkers were raked and had plenty of sand, and the fairways were perfectly fine. The rough is brutal though. The course might not be long, but the rough is the course's teeth.

I was also impressed by some of the little things. All of the ball cleaners that I tested had water/soap. There was even cold water in the coolers scattered around.

It's honestly very hard to be critical considering the price.

The highest you'll pay at JAW is $29 for a weekend time with a cart. It's worth that, but the course is very walkable and a short 9 holes - save $7 and pay $21 to walk or $18 during the week. That's about as good of a value as you can you're going to find for 9 holes in Atlanta. Sometimes you can even snag a Hot Deal for $16 that includes a cart!

It's already one of the best bang for your buck in the area, but if prices remain the roughly same when the new clubhouse opens and range re-opens, it'll probably be contender for #1.

I definitely recommend John A White.
