Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center
Public
$22 walking, $40-50 riding (paid $35 on GN deal)
20min south of Downtown
Our crew had low expectations coming in. We paid $35 after all... Can't expect much. We were pleasantly surprised. Sugar Creek is almost like a poor man's Pinehurst. Tight fairways with Pine Trees lining each side. Waste areas all around. And greens that are in really great shape.
The course is a little rough around the edges from an aesthetic point of view, but most of the tee boxes were in solid condition, fairways were perfectly fine (of course there's always some bare spots sprinkled in thanks to our GA clay), and the greens rolled nice - not too fast, not too slow.
The front 9 is TOUGH. To go low here you pretty much just need to avoid disaster on the front and you can coast through the back 9. Definitely need to have your driver dialed.
Course management wise, it's really all about off the tee. The areas around the greens aren't very penalizing if you miss, and the greens aren't overly undulating. But get out of play off the tee and it's a challenge to recover to save par.
As for the facilities and amenities, I was blown away. I've been to all of the city run muni courses around downtown and Sugar Creek might be the best in this regard. Nice little pro shop and really nice bar/restaurant with a good selection of food and alcohol. The glizzies were 🔥 on the turn.
They also have a nice grass/mat range (with lights for night range sessions), putting, and chipping area.
For $35 we were extremely happy with the value. The top price you'll pay is the $50 weekend rate... And I would still say it's worth that.
It's a relatively flat course, so I'd highly recommend walking it if you're able. The weekend walk rate is $30, $22 during the week. That's a steal imo.
Add Sugar Creek to your rotation!
