Old Toccoa Farm

Semi-Private

Rate: $115-$180

2hrs North of Atlanta

I LOVE THIS COURSE. I have from the first time I played it a few years back and I make it a point to always make the trek north at least once a year to do it. Never once have I been disappointed. So allow me to clue you in on why it's one of my all-time favorites.

Clubhouse

It's exactly what you'd expect... upscale mountain vibes with stunning views. The restaurant provides an elevated menu that is a perfect post-round finisher.

Pro-shop is on the small side, but has all of the essentials. The "OTF" logo is solid and looks great on a variety products.

On the turn you actually go down near the cart barn where they have a pop-up tent, but that really doesn't do it justice. Frozen transfusions, shots, all of the drinks you could imagine, hotdogs and brats on the roller, etc.

I had one of the frozen transfusions and brat. Absolutely hit the spot.

Practice Facilities

I always try to get to OTF a good 90 minutes early to take full advantage of the practice facilities. Full length mat/grass range, but usually off grass during the growing seasons. Range balls are included with the round and they are nice Taylormade range balls. I also liked the touch of have the range distances on the box of range balls.

I especially enjoy their chipping station to dial in those tricky 15-25 yard chip shots that can be the difference between breaking 80 or not. There's also a sneaky practice bunker off to the right. You won't notice unless you're looking for it.

The putting green is really cool. Two tiered and plenty of room. I always recommend that folks practice a few crazy putts either down the tier or up the tier because there are a few greens that will definitely force you into some tricky putts.

The Golf Course

Where to start...

First off, the course is tough. It only tips out at 6700yds, yet the rating is still 73.80/149. Translation: it's hard.

All but just a few holes have a forced carry off the tee, there's little room to miss, and good luck figuring out the course management strategy your first time out. I think you'd need AT LEAST 5 rounds to start feeling like you've unlocked each hole.

I also love the ebb and flow of the course. Much of the course is in and around the mountains, but there are quite a few flat holes with their own unique challenges.

After the signature 6th with a massive elevation drop off the tee, hole 7 runs flat along the Toccoa River - a tease at what's to come on the back. You meet the river again on 14 and can enjoy a couple flat holes on 15 and 16. Despite those holes not being terribly dramatic, 14 and 16 share a green which is a fun touch, and 15 is a sneaky tough hole where it's easy to end up blocked out on your 2nd shot.

Ok. Enough about the river holes... let's talk about some elevation. We all love an elevated tee shot... 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18 give you just that. None more so than the signature par 3, 12th. One of the best views from any par 3 in Georgia.

One little quirk to the layout is that there are only 3 par 3s and 3 par 5s.

All in all, I feel like the course forced me to use every club in my bag, and really think through my club selection and strategy. Combine that with some great views and I can't ask for much more.

Conditions

The conditions were very good, however, the greens weren't in the best shape compared to my previous times there. Usually the mountain courses stay cool enough that bent grass can stay healthy even during the late summer months, but I think it's been so hot that even these greens were feeling the affects. They also looked to have been punched 2-3 weeks prior. They were still solid overall, but when I'm paying the premium $180, I'm expecting better (even understanding the weather issues). It was also a little annoying that the practice green was much faster than how the course played. (If you're reading this and it's after September, I can almost guarantee the greens are fantastic by now)

That said, almost else was top-tier. Much like my Rivermont Review, I love how naturalistic everything feels. Rustic bunkers, and tee boxes that often feel like they were tucked within the foliage. If I'm being nitpicky, a couple tee boxes weren't 100% even and hole 3's tee box was little beat up. I'll also say that the bunkers are probably due for a facelift. Noticed some small rocks/pebbles and a lack of sand in a few.

Misc.

Pace was pretty good for the most part, but we did hit a few slow points during the round. It was a weekend and a packed tee sheet, so I wasn't really expecting to fly through the round. It's also a tough course. Pro-tip: If you're playing a hard course on a weekend, adjust your expectations accordingly.

They do have membership options. I believe the full membership fee is around $30k.

They also have some amazing stay & play options with some sweet cabins on site that you can rent. HIGHLY recommend doing that if you can.

Value

This isn't a budget course where you're trying to get a great bang for you buck. It's a little bit of a splurge for an experience, and in that sense it's 100% worth the $180 rate. And if you can get up there during the week, the $110 weekday rate is a great value for the cost.

I will say the green condition was disappointing, and there was no warning ahead of time or anything. So if you're looking at heading up there, I would recommend waiting until cooler weather moves in so the greens get back into top shape.

I definitely recommend Old Toccoa Farm.
