Every private club has a set of priorities: social activities, family focused amenities, etc. Rivermont's priority is golf, and WOW do they do golf well.

Clubhouse

From the outside the clubhouse is a little bizarre. Almost a ultramodern look. Parking is a bit of an issue as well. Once inside though it's very nice. The bar/restaurant provides a great vie

w overlooking 1 and 18. There's also a sim room.

I love when a course has a special beer specifically for them and the Rivermont lager is nice and crisp. Very refreshing.

Pro-shop was pretty small, but fine. Wish they had some better little trinkets. I like to collect ball markers, but there weren't a lot of options.

The halfway house had everything you'd expect. Also nice that it's right next to the pro-shop in case you need a restock of anything.

Practice Facilities

Practice facilities were GREAT, which was expected considering they were renovated a couple years back. Grass/mat range, there's an area where you can just hit into net as well, and there's a really cool pitching area just off to the side of the range. Oh! And there was a fairway bunker near the hitting nets you could practice out of too. Don't see that every day.

Then you head down to the first tee where you'll find a huge putting green, and two chipping greens, complete with a standard bunker and a little pot bunker to practice out of.

There was also a fun putting course right in front of the clubhouse.

The quality and variety of the practice facility was when I really started to appreciate the golf-centric nature of the club. It was obvious the owner is a golfer and someone that appreciates a quality practice area.

The Golf Course

There are nice courses that are super manicured and others that are made to fit in with the natural environment... Rivermont is the latter and I love it. The tall grass, the imperfect bunkers... it truly feels like a the golf course is one with the nature around it. But don't let the rugged aesthetic throw you off... from tee to green the course is PURE.

I really enjoyed the layout too. I always appreciate with driver isn't required on the first tee. Feels like I can ease into the round... however, don't let the distance fool you. The first 3-4 holes are sneaky tough. On hole 1 you've got water left and short of the green, plus trees on the right. Hole 3 there's some water on the right and trees lining the left side, and then 4 is a tough par 3 with a giant false front and bunkers on both sides. If you can snag a couple pars from the the first four holes you're beating the field.

The rest of the front 9 is just great golf with a nice variety of holes: zig zag par 5 with a hidden hazard down the left, short par 3 over a pond, driver par 4 and less than driver par 4.

The back 9 is really where the course comes to life! Kicks off with a 3-shot, S-shaped par 5 to a super fun drivable par 4. Fast forward to 17 where you have one of the best elevation drop par 3s in the area.

Conditions

The conditions were top tier throughout. There were a few areas where some renovation work was being done to widen some of the greens and they just finished some new tees on 16, but other than that everything was mint.

Tee boxes cut nice and short, framed by rough and tall grass. Sometimes I'd like for courses to have cool tee markers, but Rivermont is the type of course that almost doesn't want anything to stand out or take away from the naturalistic approach.

Fairways were very good as you would expect. I was very impressed with how quickly everything drained. It absolutely dumped before we played. Sure there were a few soggy spots, but I don't think there was a single area where there was standing water.

The Bermuda Greens were a lot of fun. Plenty of undulation, but not to the point that it felt gimmicky. They were a quick, but not too quick... but I've been told they can get them rolling at a 14+ when they want to. There were just a few random spots that weren't totally healthy... Hole 6 green sticks out as one that had a few unhealthy spots, but I'm being nitpicky.

Misc.

Pace was solid throughout the round.

All of the staff we interacted with were very nice.

As expected, tees in the cart + a towel was very appreciated on a brutally steamy afternoon post rain.

Random Golf Club visited the course in 2020 to highlight the sustainability of the course and how it protects native land. Here's the video

Rivermont is family owned and operated since its inception in 1973 and they take a lot of pride in that. No NYC private equity group here.

Another interesting tidbit is that it ranks in the top of Atlanta clubs when it comes to having the most single digit handicappers for a club with only 18 holes.

Value

The guest rate of $90-$140 is a really solid value. Especially if you get there early to take full advantage of the practice facilities.

Judging the course against others in the Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Duluth area I would have expected at least $125 weekdays and $175+ during primetime weekend hours. I played on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised when I saw $90 pop up on the screen.

Rivermont is a special place for golfers. It captivates in a way that is kind of hard to put your finger on, but the entire experience really drew me in. As if I was connected to the club/course despite being a first time guest. That's not a feeling I've often had.

I highly recommend Rivermont if you are given the opportunity to experience it.
