St. Marlo CC has all of the makings of a great semi-private experience - beautiful club house, solid practice area, newer carts, fun layout, etc. However, I can't say it's worth the triple digit weekend fee.
The best way I can describe the course conditions is inconsistent. Most of the tee boxes were in very good condition and some in impeccable shape, but there are more than a few that have huge sections of sand/dirt. Some of the bunkers are full of beautiful white sand, others are basically tarp and dirt. The greens were very good, but beat up due to people not fixing their ball marks (the downside to soft bent grass greens). Also, the aprons around the greens were hit and miss.
The layout is a lot of fun. Blues play a respectable 6600 yards - however, despite the overall length, you won't need driver on many of the holes. There are a few elevated tee boxes and some beautiful par 3s. The bunkering on the par 3, 7th makes it one of the most memorable par 3s around ATL.
One oddity is that 3/4 par 3s play uphill - in N. GA golf it's usually the opposite. In general, I would say that St. Marlo's has more uphill holes than the average course - none more infamous than the 9th.
The amenities were also inconsistent. Attentive staff at the bag drop, which is great! But had to pay extra for the range balls and I've personally never been there when the grass has been open (I'm sure it is sometimes though). Some of the ball washers were full and others were full of cobwebs. Loved that there were water coolers throughout, but not having tees in the cart doesn't feel great when paying $100. A towel would have been a nice touch on a hot day as well.
I want to love St. Marlos, but if you're charging $80+ for a weekday round and over $105+ on the weekend I'm going to have relatively high expectations. Those expectations weren't met. It's not an amazing value, but a weekday round is worth the $70 afternoon rate. I snagged a $55 Hot Deal and was perfectly happy - my playing partner paid $95 and wasn't.
I would recommend St. Marlos only if you can pay $75 or less.
