Sugar Hill Golf Club, a city-owned gem in Sugar Hill, GA, might just be the best budget-friendly golf option in the Sugar Hill/Buford area. Designed by Willard Byrd and playing 6522 yd from the tips.
I’d been hearing rumors that the course was starting to round into form, but once I got out there, one thing immediately stole the show “the greens”. Even though the rest of the course is still working its way out of dormancy, the greens were already in mid-season form. The dwarf Bermuda were as green as you’ll see this time of year, and they’re rolling smooth and true. Honestly, it’s the kind of surface you don’t expect this early in the season.
For an off-season round, Sugar Hill is in above-average condition and trending in the right direction as we head into peak golf season.
Clubhouse
Sugar Hill Golf Club’s clubhouse isn’t much to write home about, but it does offer a selection of apparel, balls, and branded accessories like ball markers. It’s not a luxury clubhouse, but it gets the job done and delivers where it counts, good food and great service.
The kitchen and bar offer both indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar, snacks, and bottled drinks. If you want food ready at the turn, there’s a helpful reminder on the cart with a phone number to call ahead. a great feature for keeping pace during a busy weekend round.
At the turn, I ordered a brat, tots, and a transfusion from hole 9, and everything was ready right on time when I arrived at the clubhouse. I couldn’t have asked for better service from the staff, especially given how busy it was.
Practice Facilities
The practice facility offered mat-only hitting areas, and the mats had little to no give. I didn’t spend much time hitting there, but I did use the grass chipping area to get a better feel off the turf. Range balls were $5 for a small bucket (20–25 balls), and you received a token to use at the ball dispenser machine.
The highlight of the range is the view as you hit, you’re treated to a scenic look at the mountains to the north of Sugar Hill.
The Golf Course
From the very first hole, you’re met with a downhill tee shot into a dogleg-left fairway, with significant slopes on the left side that funnel everything to the right. This is one of many holes where ball placement is key.
If you have a rangefinder, you’ll definitely want the slope feature turned on here. A well-placed 220-yard tee shot left me in the fairway with a downhill approach of about 100 yards. Resist the urge to hit driver on hole 1, and you’ll almost certainly set yourself up for a strong start to your round.
Hole #5 was my favorite and a very fun risk/reward hole. From the white tees you have a option of a 250yd carry over a lake to the front of the green on a par 4 or take a safe route to the fairway straight away from the tee box. There are at least 3 holes out there that a well placed drive will have you putting for eagle and thought that sure gets me excited.
Hole #6, 7,and 9 have the same requirements as hole one with lots of elevation changes that require precision off the tee into fairways to have any shot at getting on in 2 or playing the next layup spot for the 3 shot Par 5 9th hole.
The back nine starts off with holes 10, 11, and 12, which I’d say give you a chance to build some confidence. Holes 10 and 11 are short par 4s that play straight ahead, both featuring downhill approach shots guarded by front and rear bunkers.
Hole #12 is a 120-yard par 3 over a pond with a large front bunker. Play to the back number here, as it tends to play longer than the yardage suggests. Not every par 3 needs to be 200 yards—when you combine water, bunkers, and a small green, a 120–140 yard hole can be just as challenging. Just saying…

The rest of the back nine weaves through rolling hills and pine trees, offering more of a target-golf feel. Hole #18 is a par 5 that demands a strong drive off the tee; otherwise, you’ll be laying up to around 110 yards for your approach. The green is elevated roughly 40 feet uphill and protected by a large bunker on the front left, making it a challenging finishing hole. If you make par here, it’s well earned.
Conditions
Greens were by far the highlight, but the bunkers could use attention. Fresh sand throughout would be a big upgrade. While a few bunkers appear to have been refreshed, many feel more like Georgia red clay with some weeds mixed in rather than true sand traps.
The practice area mats could also use an upgrade, adding some cushioning underneath would make a noticeable difference.
Value
This course is a great value, especially at the weekday rate of around $50. I paid $70 for a Saturday round and still felt it was in better shape than some public courses charging the same or more. With a few improvements, Sugar Hill could easily become one of the best value courses north of Atlanta.
I recommend this course.
