One of the best public courses around Atlanta and one of the best bangs for your buck - especially on a hot deal. It tips out at 6800 yards, but plays longer due to the elevation changes with 7(!) holes that play uphill. It’s a really good challenge and what public golf courses in the Atlanta area should strive for.
Tee boxes were in very good shape even if they were recently aerated. Plenty of grass and cut short. Fairways were very healthy and it was relatively rare to see the GA clay poking through. Bunkers were solid but the sand was pretty packed. I prefer “fluffier” sand. The greens were good - grass was healthy, but today they were much slower than I’m used to playing at WP. I’ve played where their greens rival private courses. Regardless, they still rolled true.
The layout is really good, but not great. The elevation changes keep it interesting, but when I finish a round there it feels more like a challenge accomplished vs. a super fun layout experience (and that’s ok!). The par 3s are fine, but not terribly memorable. Ending with the 200+ par 3 makes for a tough finisher. Also, double check the gps before grabbing driver. Hazards can sneak up on you.
They have a stocked pro-shop and a newly renovated range, but since they’ve renovated I’ve only hit off the mats… so I’m not sure if they open the grass portion of the range or not. Large putting green too with a bunker you can practice out of. NOTE: You do not pass the clubhouse on the turn, but they usually have a cart person with sandwiches.
In the $55-65 range you won’t find much better than West Pines. $45 on a Hot Deal and you'll be extremely pleased with the value you’re getting. You could walk this course, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen someone do it because of the elevation changes. Would be a heck of a work out.
I would highly recommend making the trip out to West Pines. I’m confident you’ll enjoy your round.
