Berkeley Hills or "Berk" as it's affectionately known, is often overshadowed by the clubs next door such as Atlanta Athletic Club and TPC Sugarloaf, but I think the members prefer it that way. It's hard to call a country club in Duluth a hidden gem, but this is about as close as they come.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse had some highlights and lowlights. Downstairs in the locker rooms and lounge areas it was obvious they hadn't been updated in many years. It wasn't terrible, but when juxtaposed against the recently updated dining room, it was obvious that it's in need of a face lift. Luckily, I've been told that their upcoming projects include new flooring throughout, locker room renovation, and new furniture.

Practice Facilities
The practice facilities had what you'd expect: grass range, pitching/chipping green, huge practice bunker, and a nice sized putting green. It was also conveniently placed nearby the clubhouse, hole 1, and hole 10.
A few other things worth mentioning...
The range had an additional lower tier section to expand the number of hitting areas.
The chipping green had a lot of room to practice pitch shots from about 20 yards. There were also 4 or 5 pin placements that provided multiple targets.
The Golf Course
The overall vibe of the course is of a typical country club in a residential area - beware the sneaky OB on the house line.
The layout is definitely above average with a few memorable holes. I gotta say... hole 1 is one of my least favorite opening holes I've played. Dogleg left with the range net lining the entire left side. Follow that up with a brutally long par 4 where even a great drive might not get you around the dogleg.

Thankfully, hole 3 and 4 bring you back. The elevated tee shot on the par 5 3rd dares you to take on the water on the left and give yourself a chance at going for it in 2. The par 3 4th also features water with nearly a full carry - very reminiscent of hole 16 at Augusta National. (it was my match for the Private Course Edition of the Atlanta Masters)
5 is another hole I didn't really care for, but then 6 and 7 were great. This seemed to be a theme really until you get to 14 which starts the best/ most interesting stretch of holes on the course.
14 - beautiful downhill par 3
15 - tricky par 5 that snakes right to left
16 - risk/reward par 4 that rewards knowing your numbers
17 - quirky par 4 with a hard dogleg right and forced carry over water
18 - Epic finishing par 4 with a downhill, forced carry over water

Par 3s were very good overall - with 8 being the weakest and 14 being my favorite
4- 6i
8 - 5i
11 - PW
14 - 7i
NOTE: There is a master plan for additional course improvements such as adding/relocating bunkers, lengthening the course, and more.
Conditions
The conditions were great! Honestly, it's tough to find a critique. At this price point, you're not going to do much better.
Tee boxes were cut short and famed nicely against the rough. Hole 6 tee box had just recently been expanded and renovated. I also thought the flowers on hole 4 and the stone use on hole 10s tee box were a classy touches.

Fairways were fantastic, but the rough was very penalizing. It's not a long course, tipping out at under 6700yds. So I think in order to give the course some more teeth they don't really have a first cut. It's fairway to thick rough. Aesthetically it looked beautiful though.
Bermuda greens ran true. The speed never felt too fast or too slow. The green complexes were pretty standard overall. No crazy putts. Personally, I prefer green complexes that offer a bit more intrigue, but condition wise they were top tier.
The bunkers were perfectly adequate. Nothing special. They had sand and the edging was professionally done.
Misc.
Pace of play was steady.
Everyone was very nice - staff and members alike.
The overall vibe was almost homey. No frills. Laid back. It seemed like everyone knew each others name.

Value
The guest rate of $105-$125 is very good value. Especially the $125 weekend rate. So often weekend rates at private courses jump $50+.
Berkeley Hills isn't necessarily going to wow you, but it's not going to let you down either. If you're looking for a swanky club, The Berk might not be a fit. However, if you're looking for a place that feels like a home away from home that you can grow with, then this might be your new spot.
I would definitely recommend playing Berkeley Hills if invited.
