Towne Lake is a typical, above average North-Metro Atlanta golf course: lots of elevation changes, rolling fairways, sneaky ravines, and hard doglegs. Course conditions are usually above average, layout has a good amount of variety (although a few quirky holes), and the amenities/facilities are solid. It’s not overly long at 6700 yards from the tips and the blues are a comfortable 6200.
I was pleasantly surprised that most of the tee boxes were very healthy for this time of year. A couple of the par 3s were a bit rough, but that’s somewhat expected. Fairways were good for the most part, but like most North Georgia courses, the clay was poking through on the edges.
The greens were aerated earlier last month, so I think they are allowing them to be a bit more overgrown than usual. The actual grass was healthy and I think in another month they will be rolling very nice. They are always soft greens, which makes approach shots a bit easier.
Course management tips… Par 5s are VERY score-able holes. I almost always grab a birdie or two on the par 5s - so take advantage. Many of the holes allow you to use the rolling hills to keep you in play - use them. If you miss on the opposite side of the hills, you’re going to be struggling in the leaves/trees.
TLH has a solid pro shop and restaurant. Grass/mat range with a chipping area nearby. With that said, their putting green isn’t great, so I’d recommend using the chipping area to work on your putting as well.
I think value wise, Towne Lake is worth the ~$65 weekday fee, but I wouldn’t consider it a great value for the cost - it’s about what’s expected. $85 weekend rate is too high in my opinion, but lots of people pay it and the pace of play on the weekends can get backed up. Pace of play was great today (Tuesday - midday), but I’ve had a few long rounds on weekends.
Overall I’d recommend it, but try to make it a weekday and/or hotdeal on GolfNow. #ATLGolf
