The HISTORIC College Park Golf Course is a hilly, 9-hole, par 36 course near the airport. Despite expectations being low due to the price point, CP tends to impress visitors.
The clubhouse has a log cabin look to it, and inside are just the basics, but they do have beer! No food options other than snacks for now, but I've heard there are plans to start adding some actual lunch options like hotdogs later this year.
The practice area is UNBELIEVABLE for the price point. 2-tier grass range w/ mats, medium size putting green, chipping green, AND practice bunker. This is a better practice area than courses 5x the price. Range balls are also some of the cheapest around...
Small – $8
Medium – $10
Large – $12

I've always really enjoyed the layout due to all of the options off the tee. Plenty of risk/reward between the shorter par 4s and gettable par 5s. Two par 4s over 400 yard and 2 that are drivable. The two par 3s also provide a different challenge: Hole 6 is downhill 180 playing more like 160, and 8 is a 200+ yard par 3 over a pretty treacherous drop. Miss left and you're fighting for bogey at best. One major critique is how the range nets impact hole 9. They pretty much force a 465 yard par 5 into a 3 shot hole. I've seen folks try to hook it around the nets, but it's not really worth the risk.
It's walkable, but not an easy walk due to the hills. Luckily, there are water coolers scattered throughout the course. An unexpected, but appreciated touch for a budget course.
One other note on the layout... it's VERY beginner friendly, especially from the front tees. But even from the white or blues, there's only 1 forced carry off the tee (hole 7). If I was a beginner, College Park would be a go-to, especially with the practice options.
Course conditions were really good for the price point. Tee boxes were especially good - Overseeded, cut relatively short, very even, and plenty of grass. The fairways were fine, and I was impressed with the mower lines - nice touch for any course, much less for $14! A few washed out areas here and there (hole 1 and 5 in partcular), but usually it wasn't where my ball would've landed anyways. The greens are the weakest part of the course, but perfectly adequate. At this price point I'm expecting practically dead greens, so the fact they were pretty healthy and rolled relatively quick was a pleasant surprise. There were even some aesthetic touches that really impressed me... stones around the tee box on 8 and the stone bridge on 4 especially stood out.
Pace of play was solid, but CP attracts a lot of new golfers which can make the pace suffer. Luckily, it's 9 holes so even on the worst of days you're out of there within 2.5 hrs.
The value you're getting compared to the cost of College Park is off the charts. The only 9-hole courses close to the price range are Candler (only par 31 and poor conditions), John A. White (~30% more expensive), and Yates (70+% more expensive). And there are even hot deals you can snag for $10.39! Crazy.
If course conditions are the most important thing for you, there's always Bobby Jones, but if you're looking to stretch your dollar for all it's worth, there isn't a better bang for your buck in Atlanta golf then College Park. So next time you're headed to or away from the airport, be sure to stop by.
I highly recommend College Park.
