Sun City Peachtree Golf Club in Griffin recently opened up public play on Saturdays, so naturally we had to go check them out. The course is located within the Sun City Peachtree retirement community and the surroundings were beautiful. The course opened in 2008 and was designed by Gary Stephenson. One of the cool parts about this club is that it’s family owned and operated, and based on my experience you can definitely tell how much they care about this place.

Practice Facilities

The facilities at this club were awesome. They have a large (grass!) driving range and your round includes range balls. They also have a short game practice area with multiple hole locations and a bunker. The practice green is large with multiple slopes to practice all different kinds of putts you’ll encounter on the course. It’s also located right next to the first tee which is always a nice touch.

The Course

We played the blue tees which came in at just over 6300 yards. The design of this course has real character and variety, I was impressed. 

The front nine sets the tone right away. The opening hole is an elevated tee box with a wide fairway, though a fairway bunker guards the left side, and the green comes in diagonal and fairly narrow: a really solid start. The par 5s at 3 and 5 offer exactly the kind of risk/reward I want to see, both with hazards and greenside bunkers that make you actually think through how you want to attack rather than just trying to bomb the ball. The par 3s at 2 and 7 are straightforward off the tee, but the greens are massive and undulating, so they're more demanding than they look. And the par 4s are a nice mix: a few short, gettable ones balanced against longer ones where par is a great score.

The back nine opens with a long par 4 playing downhill into a green guarded by bunkers front and back, sloping right to left: a strong start to the closing stretch. The only hole I really didn’t care for was the par 4 13th hole. The fairway is pretty wide, but if you hit one just right of the center of the fairway, you’re completely blocked out by trees on your approach shot. As a first time visitor I wasn’t a huge fan of it. Hole 17 might be my favorite on the course. It’s a par 5 just over 500 yards that demands an accurate tee shot, and for longer hitters, a green that's reachable in two if you're willing to deal with water left and bunkers short. And normally I'm not a fan of par 3s as a finishing hole, but 18 changed my mind. Short, but with a water feature front left of the green, and probably the most picturesque hole out there. 

Conditions

No notes here, honestly. Fairways were tight and consistent from tee to green, no thin patches or unexpected lies anywhere on the course. The greens were the real standout, rolling fast and true on basically every hole, which made reading putts a lot more predictable than you get at most public courses.

Bunkers were in solid shape too, the sand was consistent enough that you could actually commit to the shot instead of worrying about what you'd find when you got in there. Overall, everything about the conditioning was just consistent. Whatever their maintenance budget is, it's working.

Pace of Play

A clean 4 hours. No standing around waiting on the group ahead, no rushing to keep up with the group behind. Just golf at the speed golf is supposed to move.

Value

When you compare the price to other public access courses in the area, Sun City is very competitive and in my opinion is a much better value. You get private course conditions for roughly the same price, if not a bit cheaper, as public courses in the area. I’d highly recommend checking this course out during Saturday public access.
